For North Korea, the war is not over, says veterinarian released U.S. Merrill Newman

Until I went home this weekend , Merrill Newman - an American held in North Korea - I had no idea what a story that he had become.
During his arrest, the 85 - year-old veteran of the Korean War had no access to the news. He has seen since the flood .
" As for the television reports and newspapers , I've seen a lot of speculation about why I stopped. I've given considerable attention to this attention and I have come to the conclusion that I did not understand that , for the North Korean regime , the Korean War is not over and that even innocent comments about war can cause big problems if you are a foreigner , "he said in a statement Monday .
Newman traveled in October as a tourist to North Korea on a package tour 10 days. The authorities caught him just minutes before his flight to Beijing was set from Pyongyang.
In his statement, Newman describes what he thinks might be activate .
" I innocently asked my North Korean guides if some of those who fought in the war in the area of Mount Kuwol could stay alive , and expressed interest in meeting them possibly if I were . The North Koreans seem to have misunderstood my curiosity as something more sinister , "he wrote .
" It is now clear to me that the North Koreans still feel much anger about the war than I thought . With the benefit of hindsight, should have been more sensitive to that . "
For weeks , the North Korean government gave no explanation of why they were holding Newman.
An explanation finally came last month when state media published and broadcast what they described as Veteran Korean War " apology." The word was written on the first of four handwritten pages detailing his alleged indiscretions.
In the note dated November 9, Newman spoke of his having advised the Kuwol unit , part of the " intelligence office " fighting Pyongyang during the Korean War . He explained how he sent troops to collect "information" and wage deadly attacks .
"After I killed many civilians and (North Korea ) soldiers and destroyed strategic objects in the DPRK during the Korean War , I made indelible offensive acts against the government of the DPRK and the Korean people ," Newman said , according to that report.
In his statement, Newman distanced himself from the comments.
" Anyone who has read the text of it or saw the video of my reader knows that the words were not mine and not surrendered voluntarily . Anyone who knows me knows that I could not have done the things that had me " confess "to " he wrote.
Newman said he was treated well while in custody.
Its release coincided with a visit by U.S. Vice President Joe Biden to South Korea , where he laid a wreath in honor of those who died in the war that pitted North against South .
A senior administration official said that the release of Newman was the result of direct contact between Washington and Pyongyang. The official said the North Koreans had told the Obama administration in a phone call that they were throwing Newman , no explanation was offered .
Newman thanked Biden, the U.S. State Department The Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang and friends and family in his statement.
He also asked that people forget to Kenneth Bae , another American to be in North Korea . Bae was arrested in 2012 and sentenced in May to 15 years for so-called acts of hostility and attempts to overthrow the government.
"I know there is much interest in this, and I will do my best to answer as many questions as possible," Newman wrote .
"For now , let me close by saying again how good it is to be back home , safe and with my loved ones . "

Antarctica recorded the coldest temperature ever on Earth

Feeling cold ? Here's one consolation: You could be in East Antarctica , the new data says that set a record for the "soul - crushing " cold , from a way of measuring temperature.

Try 135.8 degrees F below zero , that is 93.2 degrees Celsius , which sounds very little toastier . Better yet, do not try. That's what scientists say cold it hurts to breathe.

A new look at NASA satellite data showed that the Earth set a new record for the coldest temperature , as recorded by satellite. It happened in August 2010 when he came to -135.8 degrees. Then on July 31 of this year , approached again : -135.3 degrees.

The previous record , measured by thermometers , is -128.6 degrees, located in Vostok , Antarctica , in 1983.

Scientific Ice Ted Scambos the National Snow Ice Data Center said the new album is " 50 degrees cooler than anything ever seen in Alaska or Siberia or certainly North Dakota. "

" It's more like you would see on Mars in an enjoyable summer at the poles ," said Scambos , of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco scientific meeting on Monday announced that data . "I am sure that these bags are the coldest places on Earth . "

However, it will not be in the Guinness Book of Records - or recognized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO ) , the official guardians of the World Weather Records - because the readings were measured by satellites , not thermometers , said Scambos .

"Vostok is still recorded coldest location in the world ," said Randy Cerveny , a professor at Arizona State University , Geography and the rapporteur on climate extremes in WMO. "They are using remote sensing , non-standard weather stations , so that the World Meteorological Organization does not recognize that. "

Regardless of whether or not an official document , it is still incredibly cold : "Thank God , I do not know exactly how you feel ," said Scambos . But she said that scientists routinely make naked 100 degrees below zero outside scripts at the South Pole , so that people can survive that temperature for about three minutes.

Most of the time researchers need to breathe through a tube that brings air into the layer through a sleeve and heats up " so they do not accidentally inhale " , cold air , Scambos said.

On Monday, the coldest temperature U.S. was relatively warm 27 degrees Celsius in Yellowstone , Wyoming, said Jeff Masters, director of meteorology for Weather Underground private firm .

As brand cooler U.S. on record is -80 degrees F , located in Alaska in 1971.

"If you want soul crushing cold , you really have to go abroad ," Scambos said in a telephone interview. "It's just a whole other level because this cold cold plateau , the conditions are perfect. "

Scambos said the air is dry , cold ground, clear skies and cold air swoops down a dome and is trapped at a point less cold " hugging the surface and falls off."

The fact that a point on the Earth has enjoyed record cold that has little to do with global warming, as it is a point in one place , said Waleed Abdalati , ice scientist at the University of Colorado, and former chief scientist at NASA. Both Abdalati , which was not part of the measuring equipment and Scambos said this is probably an unusual random read in a place that has not been measured earlier and could have been colder or warmer in the past and we would not know .

"They talk about the range of conditions on this earth, some of which have not been able to observe ," said Abdalati .

These bright LED installations transport you to an alternate universe

Upon entering a room Yayoi Kusama Infinity is like entering a completely different universe. The door closes behind you, and you suddenly find yourself surrounded by what appears to be a galaxy of bright LEDs. The scene is beautiful in a surreal, fairy tale kind of way space age.
But it's also a bit jarring in its intimacy , it's almost as though you have been transported instantaneously from a whitewashed gallery buzz Kusama , obsessive mind .
It's a strange place to live , if only because you get the feeling that what happens in the mind of Kusama is very different from what is happening in , say, your neighbor , or colleague . The Japanese artist has lived in a Japanese mental institution since the 1970s , when she looked after a particularly stressful period in the city of New York.
But Kusama 's struggle with obsessive compulsive disorder and other mental anguish is not a shameful secret . In fact it is the opposite .
Mental problems Kusama feed his work , his obsession and compulsion manifested in its overuse of shapes, colors and mirrored rooms. During the time he has been an artist Kusama (she is now in her mid -80s ) has been obsessed with polka dots. As a result of the hallucinations he's had since childhood , the forms are stuck through his paintings, in their clothes , and are incorporated in their infinite rooms trippy .
It is no exaggeration to say that they are everywhere . Including his show recently opened David Zwirner Gallery in New York City .
In "I have come in the Sky " , Kusama continues the theme with 27 new paintings and two conference infinite, all covered with dots of different shapes and sizes. Colorful large paintings covered the eyes and the points are beautiful works themselves , but the real reason most people will walk to the Chelsea gallery and wait in line 4 hours is seeing bright rooms Kusama infinity of mirrors .
Kusama has been making these magic boxes from the 1960s , when for the first time a small room lined with mirrors and filled with phallic forms of polka dots, creating what I like to imagine a brothel in the Dr. Seuss universe could be similar.
His most recent room , "The souls of millions of light years away " is more along the lines of his " Fireflies in the water, " beloved infinite room mirrors showed hundreds of LEDs - warm tones in the Whitney last year .

Of course , Microsoft operated for many years as a great company without retail shops around , so it's not as if the failure to build successful stores is the problem itself . The real problem is that there is nothing wrong with the store. It's a great place to shop. Much better than the Apple store , actually, because the Apple store is crowded , and it's a little difficult to get the attention of an employee . In the Microsoft store a pleasant physical environment and attentive staff is obtained. Is that nobody wants to buy their stuff.
It is still a very profitable company , with its enormous strengths in the enterprise market . But companies are made of people. If nobody wants to buy things from Microsoft , that have a positive effect up in the company.

Roy Halladay is removed with the Blue Jays

Citing a desire to avoid surgery for sick again and wanting to spend more time with his family , two-time Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay retired Monday after 16 seasons in the majors with the Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies .

The 36-year- old right-hander signed a one-day contract to retire as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays , where he spent the first 12 years of his career.

He choked and choked back tears when making the announcement at a press conference at the winter meetings in Lake Buena Vista , Fla. " As a baseball player, you realize that this is something you can not do the rest of your life " Halladay said. " I really have nothing to regret. "

Halladay played for the Phillies from 2010-13 , finishing with two injury-plagued seasons . He won a Cy Young Award in the National League in 2010 , pitching a perfect game of the season and a no-hitter in his first postseason appearance .

Halladay was 203-105 with a 3.38 ERA in 416 career games , including 390 starts. He had 67 complete games and 20 shutouts .

"It has been an exciting process for me ," he said . "I feel very good about it. 's Always going to be things I miss . Much as I worked, I will not lose. I will not lose weight with running laps and poles. "

Halladay was six times All- Star, won the Cy Young Award 2003 and went 148-76 with a 3.43 ERA in 12 seasons with the Blue Jays .

He was traded to the Phillies after the 2009 season and was 40-16 with a 2.40 ERA in his first two years in Philadelphia. But the back and shoulder problems limited Halladay in 2012-13. He was 15-13 with a 5.15 ERA in 38 co starts.Former were effusive in his praise for Halladay.

Chase Utley called him "the last competitor . "

" He is by far the hardest worker I've ever seen in my life and I was treated every game like it's your last ," Utley said. "It was not a coincidence why he was the best pitcher of his era. I'm honored to have had the opportunity to see him throw for four years. 'm Going to miss his presence and passion, but above all , I will miss his intensity."

Halladay Roy Oswalt said he was a first ballot Hall of Famer.

" Roy was one of the best pitchers in the game and the students I have had the honor to play with ," Oswalt said. " No doubt it was the best pitcher of this era. "

Halladay had shoulder surgery during the season and returned in September, but clearly was not right. He went 4-5 with a 6.82 ERA in 13 starts this year.

"It's fun to play the game and go out and compete ," he said . "I wanted the fifth day more than anything. Exit and know that it will not feel good and I would not do it the way I wanted was frustrating. Tried to give everything I can , but something was holding me . felt I could not give them what I wanted. "

Halladay badly wanted to play for the Phillies have a chance to win the World Series. The Phillies had won three straight division championships , the 2008 World Series and 2009 NL championship by the time Halladay arrived. They had the best record in the majors in the first two seasons of Halladay , but lost to the San Francisco Giants in the 2010 NLCS and St. Louis Cardinals in the Division Series National League 2011.

In his last appearance in the postseason, Halladay lost to Chris Carpenter and the Cardinals 1-0 in the decisive Game 5 of the 2,011 mourning. Early in the series, the Cardinals were boosted when a squirrel scampering Meeting in the field.

" I think the only thing I took away from that you can have the best team on paper, can make the guys that they want it ," Halladay said. " But when the squirrel runs across the plate while he is trying to launch , there is nothing you can do about that. So you really start to realize that there are plenty of things out of your control. it takes more than nine guys. takes nine guys, and you need the 25 on the list. takes coaches , staff, and a lot of luck is needed. Chiefs embarrass listless Redskins

Instead of scoreboard watching a snowy Sunday, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith focused on what he and his teammates could control - win.

And boy did it make in their 45-10 defeat unravel the Washington Redskins, Mike Shanahan (3-10).

Had either the Miami Dolphins or the Baltimore Ravens lost, the Chiefs (10-3) would have secured a wild card for the playoffs in the AFC.

Neither scenario unfolded. But it did not matter as much as Smith was concerned because he thought the Chiefs looked even better than the team that started the season 9-0.

"The most important thing is that we came back to win, lose three straight, not really play our style of football, today we did that,'' Smith said after throwing a pair of touchdowns.
